TIME OF DEATH: Sometime early this morning.  His corpse was found by a nurse at 6 am this morning.
PLACE OF DEATH: Hospice of Western Reserve in Fort Wayne
CAUSE OF DEATH: Lung cancer (Friends say he was a heavy smoker, smoking an average of two or three packs of Camel cigarettes a day all his adult life). He entered the Regional Medical Center for treatment of terminal cancer a month ago and, last week, he and his family asked doctors to stop giving him medicine (except for pain killers) and to let him die so his suffering would end.
TIME OF FUNERAL: 11:30 a.m. Saturday
PLACE OF FUNERAL: The First United Methodist Church
PLACE OF BURIAL: No burial.  The body will be cremated

PREVIOUS RESIDENCES: He moved to Fort Wayne, Ind., with his family at the age of five and always lived here thereafter
EDUCATION: Attended South Side High School but dropped out after the 10th grade and never graduated
OCCUPATION: Owner and retired president of Ben’s, a chain of 17 supermarkets in the area.  He and a friend opened a small corner grocery when both were 22, and, 2 years later, Shank won his partner’s 50% share of the store in a poker game.  He subsequently transformed that one small store into the largest independent chain in the Fort Wayne area.  In 1996, he also opened a second business, Ben’s Coney Island, but it went belly-up and was closed in 1998.
OFFICES HELD: President of the local school board from 1958-1964. Past president of the County Tax Levy Board. Past vice president of the Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce.  Former trustee of the Fort Wayne Public Library.
MEMBERSHIPS: A president of Junior Achievement for five years. Past president of the city’s Council of Civic Clubs. A member and past president of the Downtown Rotary Club.
SURVIVORS: His second wife, Terese.  A son, William of Columbia, S.C. Daughters, Alice Shank DeBecker of Providence, Rhode Island, Iris Shank Stovall of 7402 Southland Boulevard and June Shank Meeske of Tucson, Arizona. 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.  Another son, David, preceded him in death.
OTHER: The family does not want flowers.  Rather, it asks friends, family and relatives to donate to the Cancer Society
